Environmentally sustainable timber windows
Environmental issues are something we are all aware of and rightly so when you see the current impact around the world. This can often leave us with questions about our own impact on the environment and what we can do to help. It can even be something to consider when looking to renovate your home or when sourcing contractors and materials for a new project.
All industries must do their bit to help, which is why at IWP Dansk we take every measure possible to limit our impact on the environment. In this blog we explore the importance of choosing the right materials and methods for repairing your window to reduce the impact on the environment.
Sustainably sourcing materials
Whether it be a new car or a cleaning product, using ethical materials is becoming more of a priority, and that is no different for us when sourcing materials for our work, especially the timber that is used for our windows and doors.
We have always sourced the best quality timber from ethical suppliers. We are accredited by the FSC® (C139857), the Forest Stewardship Council®, a not-for-profit non-government organization created to promote responsible management of the world’s forests by tracing any wood from the root to end product. They safeguard the forests of our planet so rare species are protected, habitats survive and prosper, and deforestation is minimal with trees continually being replanted.
The timber we use is easily grown and has very few knots. It is naturally water-resistant, and the tree grows beautifully straight making it easy to process with very little waste; therefore, perfect for windows!
Restoring vs replacing
Timber is an incredibly strong material, even when your windows show signs of rotting it is often just 5% of the window frame that is affected. With this in mind our ethos is always to try to restore rather than replace windows where possible. For over 35 years we have developed a strong set of skills in window restoration which means we are experts in repairing windows back to their former glory.
We use carefully sourced wood fillers and specialist techniques to strip sections back, treat, fill, protect and paint, ensuring the window lasts for years to come. We have worked on individual windows for private properties, right through to large commercial buildings requiring the restoration of hundreds of windows; so no job is too big or small! Check out our work on Guys & St Thomas’ hospital in London where we restored hundreds of teak windows.
The ability to restore timber / wooden windows is a major advantage for the environment unlike plastic products, where so often the best way to fix them is to replace completely, causing more waste. Remember, timber windows can last as long as the building if treated correctly!
Plastic vs Timber
In recent studies researchers have found that when properly protected with paint or wood stain, timber windows last twice as long as a plastic alternative.
Wooden windows and doors are biodegradable and absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, therefore not only do they keep your house warm, look beautiful, keep the character of your property, add value, and save you money on bills, but also give back to the environment and help clean the air you breathe!
Timber windows create less waste
We use a technique called multi layering to produce our windows frames, a process that involves joining wood sections together to create one piece of timber that is strong and durable. We have used this technique for over 35 years as it creates strong and beautiful windows which match the original design perfectly making them ideal for conservation projects. This technique means that the knots can be cut out whilst the remainder of the wood is used. The knot free multi-layered timber that is left is immensely strong, more of the wood is used, and the waste is next to nothing!
Protecting windows and doors
Protection is key! Whether we are restoring or replacing, we treat the wood with our carefully selected products which we have been using ever since we started over 35 years ago to ensure the wood is protected from the elements and will last for years. The longevity of a wooden window requires a thorough application of paint or wood stain to protect the wood from contact from any moisture. Our environmentally friendly paints and stains contain no solvents and are spray applied before assembly. This delivers the most thorough protection for a low maintenance lifetime.
IWP Dansk do everything they can to restore, and if replacing, source the timber ethically – all of which minimise our impact on the environment and helps us do our bit as a responsible business and window manufacturer.
